What Window Awnings Do and
How We Install Them

A window awning is a fabric, aluminium or timber
cover fixed above a window to shade the glass from
outside. Because the sun is stopped before it hits the
window, the room behind it stays cooler than it would
with an inside blind alone.

Shutters Australia measures, supplies and installs
window awnings across Sydney Metro, including the
Lower Blue Mountains.
Window awnings are one part of our awnings range,

which also covers canopies, folding arm awnings and
alfresco blinds. If you are shading a patio as well as
windows, one consultant can measure for both in the
same visit.

Why Shade Windows From the Outside

External shade stops heat before it reaches the glass, which an inside blind cannot do.

ICON

Cooler rooms

Less sun on the glass means less heat in the room on summer afternoons.

ICON

Less glare

Soft shade makes screens easier to see and rooms more comfortable.

ICON

Less fading

Floors, rugs and furniture are kept out of direct sun.

ICON

Privacy

Angled fabric screens windows from the street while you still see out.

Types of Window Awnings

The main types of window awnings differ in how the arm or guide holds the fabric, which changes how much
view and shade you get.

TypeHow it worksSuits
Automatic awning
(automatic top roll)
Spring-loaded arms push the fabric out at an angle as it is lowered Standard windows where you want light and a view
Pivot arm awning Arms pivot from the sides so the fabric can drop straight down or angle out Windows where you want shade and a view out
Wire guide awning Fabric runs down on tensioned side wires Tall windows and doors; screening from the side
Cafe screen A straight drop blind within a frame Verandahs and shopfront windows
Fixed window awnings A permanent canopy or hood of fabric, aluminium or timber Year round shade and weather cover

Fabric, Aluminium or Timber Window Awnings

Choose fabric for shade you can retract, aluminium for permanent low-care cover, and timber for a heritage
look.

Fabric

Acrylic canvas and mesh fabrics on retractable frames. Fabrics from come in a wide colour range.

ICON

Aluminium window awnings

Fixed hoods and louvred awnings in powder coated aluminium. Low care and permanent.

Timber window awnings

Timber canopy styles suit Federation and heritage homes.

Fabric awnings are the most flexible, because they retract when you want the sun. Fixed aluminium and timber
awnings stay in place all year and also keep rain off the window. Mesh fabrics let you see out through the
awning, while solid canvas gives deeper shade and more privacy.

Which Awning Suits Your Window

Match the awning to the window and how the sun hits it.

Contemporary window awnings in slim frames and plain fabrics suit modern homes, while striped canvas and
canopy shapes suit older streetscapes. Your consultant will look at the street and the house as well as the
window before recommending a style.

Fabrics, Colours, Controls and Motors

Every window awning is made to your window and your choices. Pick the fabric colour and openness, the
frame colour, and how it operates: a manual winder, spring operation, or a motor.

Motorised awnings extend with the push of a button, a sun sensor or a timer, and can still be operated
manually. We use Somfy and Nice motors with sun and wind sensors, so awnings can lower on their own on
hot afternoons and retract when the wind picks up.

Caring for Your Window Awnings

Brush off leaves and dirt, then hose the fabric gently. Let it dry fully before you retract it, so it does not mark or
grow mould. Retract fabric awnings in strong wind, and check the arms and fixings once a year.

For motorised awnings, a wind sensor retracts the awning for you when the wind picks up. Fixed aluminium
awnings only need a rinse with fresh water, especially on homes near the coast.

Window Awnings FAQs

What is a window awning?

A window awning is a cover fixed above a window to shade the glass from outside. It can be fabric, aluminium or timber, and fixed or retractable.

How much do window awnings cost?

The cost depends on the type, the width of the window, the fabric and whether it is manual or motorised. A free measure gives you a written quote.

Are window awnings worth it?

Yes, for windows that take direct sun. They keep rooms cooler, cut glare and protect floors and furniture from fading.

Do I need council approval for a window awning?

You may not. Many window awnings on houses in NSW can be exempt development if they meet set conditions, but heritage areas, strata buildings and larger structures may need approval. Check with your council before you order.

What types of window awnings are there?

The main types are automatic, pivot arm, wire guide, cafe screen and fixed awnings. Each holds the fabric differently; see the types table above.

Do window awnings reduce heat?

Yes. They shade the glass from outside, so less of the sun’s heat gets into the room.

Can window awnings be motorised?

Yes. Motorised awnings run from a remote, timer or sun sensor, and a wind sensor retracts them in strong wind.

How do you clean awnings?

Brush off dirt, hose the fabric gently and let it dry fully before retracting it.
